Last night, in the men's class, we remarked how humans are God's crowning achievement in creation. So much so that he creates them to rule over the rest of creation (Gen. 1:26) and even allows Adam to name created things (Gen. 2:19-20). God places an incredible amount of trust in humans: yet this is not enough, they wish to be more like God (Gen. 3:7). Even after this monumental breech of trust, God's love prevails: he begin the process of redemption (Gen. 3:15).
We serve an awesome God!

Matthew, you mentioned the amount of trust God placed in man by allowing man to name animals. I noticed man also named woman and called her Eve. There is a sense of not just ownership in naming but responsibility and relationship as well. Mankind is responsible for creation just as man is entrusted with relationship and care of woman. We can debate that relationship all day, but my point is this: In this weeks reading we see God also naming/renaming his chosen leaders, children of the promise and blessing. We see it in Abraham, Sarah and Jacob. The same sense of relationship and care is true for God and his children as it was for the first man and the first woman

Lyn - that's a great point. Jesse and Jeff always pointed out that naming and names are important in the narrative. It's interesting how you could track development of the story just by following the names of the main characters and their meaning.
