Reading 16 chapters for the purpose of teaching is a real chore. I'm trying to narrow down the list of important and interesting themes. Themes like: conflict in nearly every chapter, worship and travel seem to be related, as well as the overarching theme of "what is God trying to teach His people." I think sometimes we assume that our Bible heroes are merely going through life and God chooses to intervene once in a while. It may be, perhaps, that God is forming and teaching and guiding His story and purposes through His chosen people, while they think they are just going about living their life to the best of their ability. Hmmm.

The temptation to summarize everything is great. However, I am leaning towards the story of Jacob as the central theme of my lesson. He is a charachter that I think more of us can relate to with his bargaining, insecurity, and deception. The 'showdown at the Jabbok" has such potential for tension in the story.
